Provincial HPG Meeting in Sapa, Lao Cai

The provincial Health Partnership Group (HPG) meeting 2016 themed: “Designing local health systems for health equity and universal health coverage: Contextualizing the family medicine approach” was organized at Sapa town, Lao Cai province on August 2nd, 2016 with the support from EU funded Health Sector Policy Support Programme Phase II. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Tran Thi Giang Huong, ICD Director General, Ministry of Health, and co-chaired by Mr. Dang Xuan Thanh, Vice Chairman, Lao Cai People’s Committee, and Dr. Lokky Wai, Representative, World Health Organization in Vietnam. The objectives of the meeting was to discuss the possibility and feasibility of implementing family medicine integrated with local health system and experience/lesson learnt of development cooperation in localities.
More than 130 national and international participants as well as provincial representatives attended the meeting. The discussion focused on the family medicine model development at local level. The highlighted point raised by participants during the meeting was the possibility  of  intergrating the family medicine into the existing local health system, which will contribute effectively to strengthening the grassroots health system.
    
In the afternoon, the participants are divided into 2 groups to visit Sa Pả and Tả Phìn commune health stations and Sa Pa general district hospital. These are two disadvantaged communes with the majority of ethnic minority people. The purpose of the visit was to understand the situation of local health system in rural and remote communes, quality and access to health services, UHC and environment conditions.
  
The European Union in Vietnam has allocated a conditional grant to the Government of Vietnam in amount of 100 million Euro for the period of three years (2015-2018) as a direct budget support to existing sector financing. The proceedings of the grant will be used to decrease disparities between rich and poor by concentrating efforts during the next 5 years in poorest regions of Vietnam as well as to support the Ministry of Health of Vietnam in increasing quality of services at grass root and hospital levels.
